Skeletons

No, this blog hasn't turned into all crafts all the time. Just that there has been so many cute crafts out there in cyber space this Halloween season. I just can't resist especially the easy ones that my little folks will enjoy. Hence the paper plate skeleton, I saw this at Naptime Crafters. 16 paper plates and what seems like a billion brads later. I had a little trouble locating brads in my small town but eventually bought the last box in existence at Rite Aid. I had most of the parts cut out. The kids did their hands, feet, and skull face. IF I had found my hole punch the kids could of done the brads easily.

Notes of a Mediocre Homemaker - Mr Bones (Paper Plate Skeleton)

Halloween wouldn't be complete without a paper plate skeleton

A week ago I had my young 1st grade charge starting way to early.  I thought this would be a good time filler.  I had most of the skeleton cut out.  He drew the face and we traced his hands and feet. This was definitely a "we do together" activity.  In a previous version, I used brads but I tied them bones together I have done this activity in the past so I knew having things pre-cut was really the way to go. The idea is from " The 36th Avenue." We also watched the below video several times.

Hike #1 - Trek for Treasure

,
Mrs Epi and I and Stanley, the puppy, went on our first hike in Rockport State Park on Friday June 9th with Trek for the Treasure.   Check out my first post on Trek for the Treasure for all the details about our this hiking adventure. Rockport State Park is an old growth forest that is a 632 acre day use park.  The park is approximately 1.5 hours from us so we had to find a day that worked in the 2 week window. We hiked the day after a rain storm so it was a bit on the muddy side. Glad I took Mrs Epi's suggestion of extra shoes.

It was a beautiful hike on the Evergreen Trail with lots of mossy large growth trees, banana slugs, and mushrooms growing on trees. Both of us thought it was a bit more up and down than we expected for a first hike. It was a 3 mile hike.

Of course, I used Digital Project Life to document. We found the clue box which was a skeleton in the woods. Stanley the dog wanted nothing to do with the skeleton.  He barked and barked. Hopefully, we didn't traumatize him for life. We were team #133 to sign the logbook out of approximately 200 teams.

The only hike were team placement counts is the last hike as the first 100 get a special prize.  Looking forward to the next hike.

Eek, it's MONDAY!

I put Mr Rat in the downstairs bathroom with my Dollar Store EEK sign. It is not everyone who has a giant demonic rat in their bathroom. Maybe this post should be Monday Ruminations (Meditations)

Things I am Ruminating on...

Now I've got the trees. Hey everyone should drive with a forest inside their truck. How and when am I going to plant these long awaited bad boys? That is the question of the day. Lowe's had their cedar trees marked down to $7.50. This is part of my grand plan to hide the hot tub. It is taking a long time to implement the hide the hot tub plan.

Gee,I wish I thought of putting my skeleton's up in my front windows. Wait, I would actually have to get my children to make them. In all seriousness, I think this looks great. I just am uber jealous that I didn't think of it. See my skeleton post here.

How I am not cut out to be Public School Parent. I know that sentence deserves some kind of explanation but I don't want to write something I am going to regret.

It is official

I now live behind Cascadia Elementary. The school board has finally decided on a name. The picture above is from the Ferndale Schools Winter 2006-07 newsletter. Right now, it looks like a skeleton of this as it is mainly metal beams.

Gothic Coffee Halloween Shelfie

I changed it up a bit this year. I added Spanish moss to coffee mugs and coffee pots. I also have the skeleton hands. Hands from the Dollar Tree.  The Fortune sign is also from the Dollar Tree.  I really like it. Now if I can only get the bottom shelf from being a dumping ground for my family.

2022 Gothic Floral Coffee Shelfie We have lost the glass doors and changed the color of the cabinet. I am really liking this year's version.

Sometimes it is fun to prank your kids. I couldn't resist when I saw this skeleton piranha. My son is big into aquaculture but yet has this empty aquarium in his room.

Haunted Forest Part 2

Charlie in his werewolf mask on the Game Camera
On Halloween, we worked the Haunted Forest.   The rain seemed to stop just when we needed it to. I thought I would share some more pictures. This was an eagle scout project whose goal was to raise food goods for the local food bank. It was held at the local gun range in a wooded area on the property. We had quite a few people who came through on Halloween. See Part 1

The Haunted Forest Food Drive ended with huge success. With the great effort of the Custer Sportsmen's Club the Food Drive was able to collect over 2187 lbs of food for the Ferndale Food Bank! That is nearly 3 times the goal that I had for this event. The success of the Haunted Forest Food Drive was a direct result of the generosity of the patrons of the Custer Sportsmen's Club.

31 days of Little Things - Pendants/banners/Garland

Hi my name is Heather and I like to make Banner or Pendants.  It is ran addiction.  I made this one with the help of Chuckles.  It's festive, right? Of course I got the idea from Pinterest.  The original is from Twig and Toadstool and it was a colorful skeleton one.

It is small thing I do to make things interesting. Most aren't that complicated. I don't do complicated and most are made with construction paper. Here are some examples :

4th of July
Bunny Garland
Apple Banner
Peeps bunny Banner

Lego Show and Tell

Chuck partcipated in the Lego Show and Tell at the library.  Chuck made a scene complete with a skeleton borrowed from his brother.

This is a much looked forward to event.  This is part of the Public Library's Summer Reading Program.  This has evolved from a competition to a show and tell.  I love listening to the kids descriptions of their projects. There was a vote for best in show plus a drawing for book bucks redeemable at the Friends of the Library Book Store.  There was a tie this year.
Viking Ship with dragon on front
Star Wars Scene with many many mini figs
Because this was held much earlier in the day there were less partcipants than previous years. The creativity was amazing.

Q-Tip Skelton

We did this quick craft on Monday.  The original idea is from pinterest.  The actual skeleton head is from Bee in Our Bonnet. They turned out pretty cute.

Notes of a Mediocre Homemaker - Halloween Shelf Styling

I can't help myself.  I love to style my shelves for the holidays and Halloween is no exception. It makes me happy.

The only prerequisite for my shelf styling is it has to be cheap and it should use stuff I already have. This year I took a Halloween Card (Skeleton) and framed it in a frame I already had.  I also had some pom poms from the dollar store.left over from another project.  I picked out all the orange ones out and strung them. I also have a candlestick thing.  I really like glass candlesticks as pedestals.

Evolution of the Shelves

I thought it would be interesting to see the evolution of the Halloween Shelf Styling.  Oh, the actual shelves were thrifted.
