Bitter Lake Wildlife Refuge

On Sunday of the President's Day weekend, we spent the morning exploring Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge. This is definitely the off season for this place.  However, it was nice and quiet. During the right season this place is known for the diverse variety of dragon flies.

Glad it was too cold to run into the owner of this skin.

There were a lot of birds.  We saw ducks, a few sand cranes, hawks.

It was windy. My hairdo was on point.

Picture over the scope. This was taken by my husband.  He thought it was interesting that it had both front and rear sights.

52 Ancestors - Gone too Soon

I have been participating in Amy Johnson Crow's 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks project. The prompt was "Gone Too Soon."

"Glider Men Shoot Way Out in Wild's" was the headline of Gazette of Cedar Rapid, Iowa on March 19, 1944. Lt Charles Bourck Liston had been in a glider crash.  Two Gliders had crashed in Burma.  The article goes on to tell of their life and death game of hide and seek with the enemy in a nigh chase through the jungle.  Charles was to injure his leg in the crash. They were to walk half mile to the bank of the Chindwin only to hear three shots behind them. Liston said, "we couldn't find anything to make into a raft and Evans and myself were the only person who could swim."  On this day Lt Charles Liston would survive.

The headline was much different May 2, 1944, "15 Iowa Yanks Missing".  Lt Charles Liston was listed among the missing.

Below is the article that was in the Dallas County News, Adel, IA; Wednesday 14 June 1945.

" The secretary of war desires to express his deepest regret that your son, First Lieutenant Charles Be Liston, died in Burma, April 2, 1944, a prisoner of the Japanese government. In reports received says your son was captured in Burma March 6th, 1944. Confirming letter follows."

The above telegram was received Monday night by Mrs Minnie Liston, Route 3, Adel from J.A. Adjutant General, and brought untold sadness to the mother and many friend of the young man.

For many months (since April 1944) Mrs Liston had been anxiously awaiting news of her son. At one time a message was received stating that he had been reported missing since March 6th of the same year. Nothing more was heard from then until the wire came Monday.

Luit Liston, 35, entered the service more than four years ago and was a glider pilot and such saw some thrilling experiences according to the news dispatches from, where he was associated with Jackie Coogan, former movie star. he received his training at Victorville, Cal., was commissioned a second Lieutenant at Bowman Field, KY., and advanced to the first lieutenant after going overseas.

Charles served as a First Lieutenant and Pilot on a Glider, 1st Air Command Force, U.S. Army Air Force during World War 2.

He resided in Los Angeles County, California prior to the war. He was born on Aug 16, 1909, in Union, Iowa to Charles R Liston and Margaret Louise Bourck.  His mother, Margaret, died during childbirth. The mother referenced in the article above is his father's second wife, Minnie who raised him from a very young age. At his family's request Iowa was put on the Tablets of the Missing.

Charles was on a secret mission flying on a Glider on March 6, 1944 into Burma. After landing they were captured by the Japanese and sent to the Rangoon POW camp in Myanmar {Burma).

Charles died while POW of the Japanese Army at Rangoon. He was awarded the Air Medal, Purple Heart, and the Prisoner of War medal.

Crew of this Glider

Charles Liston, 1st Lt , Pilot (MIA)

Julius F Yackie Corp (MIA)

In 1946 Charles' remains were recovered from a burial at the Rangoon POW camp. Tragically, his remains, along with others were being transported from Rangoon to Calcutta, India by a C-47 which crashed on May 17, 1946. Charles remains were not recovered from this crash.

House to Home - New Driveway and Porch

Yes, we are the people who bought a house without a garage.  We did get a large lot, however.  The driveway was rough, and we had this weird landing step in front of our front door and side door. People kept falling off the step. So now we have a proper porch and wider driveway.

Inappropriate Thoughts

I am beginning think there is a market for black market pecans. Interesting fact where I live in the high desert there are pecan groves. Pecan trees grow in the park. You can find people gleaning the fallen pecans. They are free for the taking. You see people with their plastic grocery sacks gathering the fallen bounty. Our neighbor has a pecan tree, so we have been picking the fallen pecans out of our lawn. Nonna's neighbor also has a pecan tree, so we picked the fallen pecans out of her lawn. Who knew I would be living in the land of such pecan bounty. Yes, this is where all the nuts are.

What I read February

I am linking up with Modern Mrs Darcy's Quick Lit.  Check out what everyone else is reading.

The Revolutionary Samuel Adams by Stacy Schiff

Listen, my children, and you shall hear

Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,

On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five:

Hardly a man is now alive

who remember that famous day and year.

The book opens with the ride of Paul Revere. A lot of us are familiar with the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem.  But do we know who specifically Paul Revere is riding to warn the British are coming? I probably wouldn't have picked up this title on my own. It was a book club read and it is challenging. I think this is the slowest I have read a book in a while. That being said, it is a worthwhile read. Samuel Adams is very interesting and not to be confused with his younger cousin John Adams. Samuel Adams is described as, "all the smoke, flame, and lava."  This was also said about Samuel Adam, " if there was a subversive act, he was somewhere near or behind it." I think the vast contributions that Samuel Adams made are somewhat lost to history. Maybe that is what he intended. This made me think differently about the Revolutionary War.  We have such a sanitized version we are taught.

Who Do You Think You Are? by Megan Smolenyak

I am reading this as part of my genealogy education. This book was published in 2010 so there are many more digital resources now, but the information is a good foundation for a family history buff.  I would like to get a thrifted copy to have as a reference.  Megan makes family history accessible to all. It also made me watch a lot of Who Do You Think You Are? on tv.

Valentine Card 2023

I made this year's card with the Cricut maker.  I live near Roswell NM, so I had to include UFO's. I think the stick figure alien family on the back is cute. That was a request of my husband. I got a late start for me on these cards. I really had too many ideas once again. I remail my Valentine's through Loveland Colorado and they get a special cachet and Loveland Colorado post mark.

Inappropriate Thoughts

It has been a strange week with doctors, concrete pours and taxes. It was a lot of peopling for me.  There was the CPA with Communist Posters from Ukraine in his office with an office dog.  Believe me there is a story there. There were concrete guys he smoothed concrete throughout the night. There was pizza on National Pizza Day with Nonna. We watched the show, Sewer Divers. I am scarred. So here is to a start of another week. I am sure it won't be as strange and bizarre as this week, right?

Dead People Files- Valentine Birthday

I thought it would be interesting to research an ancestor with a Valentine's Day birthday.  This ancestor is from my Lendman family tree.

Hannah Sutliff Hopkins- My 6th Great Grandaunt

Hannah was born to Abel and Charity Sutliff on February 14, 1787, in Waterbury, Connecticut.  Hannah was born in the same year as the Constitutional Congress approved the Constitution on September 27, 1787. Hannah's father, Abel, was a Revolutionary War soldier.  Hannah married Timothy Hopkins. Timothy's father was also a Revolutionary Soldier.  There is quite a bit known about Timothy who was born in Plymouth Pennsylvania. It was said that Timothy killed a bear with an ax and 2 dogs while living in Pennsylvania and Tim's Run was named after his exploit. Timothy and Hannah were early settlers to Morgan County, Ohio and settled near Wolf Creek. Timothy was a farmer. Timothy and Hannah were Methodists and one of their sons, James, would become a Reverend. Timothy was also a Justice of the Peace.  Timothy and Hannah had 5 sons and 4 daughters. Hannah lived along life dying at the age of 84. Hannah died August 22, 1871, in Chesterhill ,Ohio.

Interesting Fact.

Did People Celebrate Valentine's Day in the 1700's?

It was popular in the 1700's to write special notes and letters on Valentine's Day. It wasn't until the 1800's that preprinted Valentine's would become popular.

Favorite Loveland Valentine's

2019

I thought I would share some of my favorite Loveland, Colorado Valentine's. I have framed my favorites because some of them are really works of art.

This one is one of my favorites.  I am not sure of the year, though.

Once again not sure of the year.  I just love the landscape.

In Loveland, Colorado they place hearts with messages on the light posts. This is a fundraiser for the local rotary clubs.  I think they sold out in 2 hours this year.  My sister and I got one for parents for their 50th anniversary.

This is a visual of their love lock wall.  People put their love locks on the metal love scuplture.

The above one is from 2018.

House to Home - Valentine Vignette

I am missing my love wall.  I did make a little Valentine Vignette above my China Cabinet.

The R is from a salvage store. The wooden heart was purchased from the local Walmart from nonprofit group that houses homeless people. The love was purchased from Walmart.  The picture is a framed Loveland Colorado Valentine card.  See better picture below of Valentine.  Loveland holds a competition each year for the Valentine card design and cachet verse.   My parents usually send me one of the Valentine cards.

52 Ancestors - Oops

The writing prompt for 52 ancestors this week is OOPS. 52 ancestors in 52 weeks is a writing challenge by Amy Johnson Crow

This is more like a tragic oops or perhaps a wrong time, wrong place oops. The story I am about to tell is about a very shirttail relative to me.  It would be a first cousin 6 times removed.  I was interested in her story because she was born in Boston but died in Italy. She married up and ran in very influential social circle.

When Eliza Greene Perkins Doane was born on November 21, 1789, in Boston, Massachusetts, her father, John, was 43, and her mother, Lucretia, was 41. She married James Perkins and they had four children together. She then married George Washington Doane and they had two children together. She died on November 10, 1860, in Firenze, Firenze, Italy, at the age of 70, and was buried there. - Ancestry

Eliza was born to in 1789 to John Callahan and Lucretia Greene. Her father was a ship captain. His ship was Lucretia named after his wife. Eliza married James Perkins who most likely was a merchant.  The Perkins family was considered a upper class 19th Century Boston family known in social, literary and political circles. They had 4 children, 1 girl and 3 boys.  Of this marriage, her son Charles was an eminent writer on sculpture and paintings. Eliza was remarried to the Reverend George Washington Doane who was a Espicolplian Bishop, the first Bishop of New Jersey, and they would have 2 boys. George Hobart Doane, who became a Roman Catholic Priest and William Croswell Doane, who became a Espicolplian Bishop. Here children from her first marriage to James Perkins remained with her parents.

Eliza travels to Italy in 1858/1859. In June 1859, the inhabitants of Perugia rebelled against the temporal authority of the pope and established a provisional government, but the insurrection was quashed bloodily by Pius IX's troops. Eliza was in Perugia with her oldest son, Edward, daughter, Sarah, granddaughter Eliza. They are attacked by local revolutionaries, and it causes a diplomatic incident. She dies November 10,1859 at the Villa Capponi, following the trauma of the sack of Perugia from which she never recovered.

Villa Capponi

The Villa Capponi was owned by her son, Charles. She receives a very elaborate temporary burial, encased in lead, as if intended to be shipped back to America, partly paid for by her sons of her earlier marriage, Edward Perkins, residing in Florence, and Charles C. Perkins.

SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF MRS ELIZA DOANE WHO WAS BORN/ IN BOSTON USA DEPARTED THIS LIFE/ NOVEMBER 10, 1859, AT THE VILLA CAPPONI/ AGED 70/ BLESSED ARE THE PURE IN HEART/ FOR THEY SHALL SEE GOD/ . . . MATTHEW [5.8] / THIS TABLET IS PLACED BY HER LOVING CHILDREN

Above is the inscription on her grave in Italy. She is never shipped back. Oops

Research Questions

Why was Eliza in Italy?

Why was her body never shipped back?

I am going to assume money was why she was not shipped back. On find a grave she has two separate find a graves - here and here   These find a grave records indicate differing years of death. It is indicated that son's from her first marriage paid for the burial.  Her sons from her second marriage were both clergy. George Hobart Doane, Msg was a Roman Catholic Priest and her other son, Rev William Croswell Doane who was a Bishop in the Episcopal Church like his father.

INTERESTING FACT

John Callahan, Eliza's father, has a portrait in Massachusetts Historical Society Online Collection.  Below is his biography.

What is Saving Me

What is saving me? I am linking up with Modern Mrs Darcy. Check out what everyone else is saying.

I know it is always the little things that are saving me.

NBA League Pass

I am a closeted Trail Blazer fan.  I moved to New Mexico from Washington where it was fairly easy to catch a game on cable tv.  My husband gifted me an NBA League Pass and I love being able to easily watch the Blazers except when they play the Suns.  The Suns are considered the local team. (Don't know how.) Watching these games is something I really look forward to. My husband might have gotten the short end of the stick on this one as I like to comment on the game. I think I should be hired as the inappropriate commentator. - Dame Time! The Albama Slammer from LSU, What does Grant have in his designer bag, Bosnian Beast, The Shaq of Troutdale etc.  He is not a sports fan.

Lotion

It is dry here and so is the skin. I know that Cetaphil has been saving my hands. If I could just get my husband to stop quoting Silence of the Lambs, " It rubs the lotion on the skin."

Tea

Another gift from my husband as I couldn't find the chia tea in stock at our local store. This is the best chia tea. I am a big fan of Stash tea Chai but this is better in my opinion. I am an avid coffee drinker but during the winter I like to slow down with tea.

Creative Endeavors

sneak peek at this year's valentine

I have been riding a creative wave lately. If you are a creative type, you know you just got to ride the wave while it last. I think I always put this on what is saving me. I just have put my homemade valentines in the mail to be remailed through Loveland Colorado to get stamped with the Loveland Valentine Cachet.  It is truly a labor of love.  Every year, I come up with a new one. This year I had too many ideas.

Mantras

"Everything is Figureoutable" and "That isn't a worry for today" have been my go-to sayings. We completed a surprise move from Washington to New Mexico. We are still in the messy middle even after 9 months and saying these two things has reframed things for me. I have said it so much that Nonna, my mother-in-law, has gotten me a sign with "Everything is Figureoutable on it".
