Booking It June Update

Check out what others are reading at Life as Mom.

Mindblind by Jennifer Roy I checked out from the library. It can be found in the Young Adult section.  It is about a 14 year old Asperger's Boy and how he is navigating his adolescents.  He is involved in a rock band.  He believes he is not quite a genius because he hasn't contributed anything meaningful to the world.  I thought it was a good book.  It reminded me in some parts of my oldest son and his very black and white thinking.  I loved that the main character was in love with the Amazing Race TV show because my kid is too.

I also read Unquenchable Thirst - Following Mother Teresa in Search of Love, Service, and an Authentic Life by Mary Johnson.  This was an autobiography.  Mary Johnson left Missionaries of Charity after being a nun for 20 years.  She goes into great deal about convent life and her spiritual journey.  There are a few graphic scenes in regards to sexuality.  It was interesting and gave me some insight into what it would be working for Mother Teresa.  She really delves into the inner workings of the convent and the politics of religion.  I would of liked to have know more how she navigated her life after she left the convent especially since she was a nun for 20 years.

I finally got my hands on the much touted book, Wild by Cheryl Strayed.  Yes, I know another book about the Pacific Crest Trail. This about a woman who did much of the trail- 1,100 miles as a solo hiker with no experience as a long distance hiker. I totally consumed this book in 2 days. Cheryl reeling after the lost of her mother to cancer. She trashes her marriage. She cheats and does drugs.  There are some very raw parts in this book.  (There are some very adult themes in this book so if this makes you uncomfortable this book isn't for you.) She makes a rather impulsive decision to hike the Pacific Crest Trail.  She embarks on what becomes somewhat a spiritual pilgrimage of self discovery. She talks about her need to walk alone. I don't know why I am so drawn to these books. Maybe I need to go on my own pilgrimage. I really like this quote

There's no way to know what makes one thing happen and not another. What leads to what. What destroys what. What causes what to flourish or or take another course.

Cheryl need the trail to be the catalyst to change her life. One thing is for sure when we are in pain, abandoned, and an emotional wreck, we trash even the good things or more to the point, we can't even recognize the good things. As a side note, this has been chosen for Oprah's book club. I have now read 3 books or memoirs about those who walked the Pacific Crest Trail - The Cactus Eaters, A Blistered Kind of Love, and Wild.  They were all good.  My review of Cactus Eaters and A Blistered Kind of love can be found in my April Booking It Post.

31 days of Adventure- Arm Chair Adventures

I am joining the Nester's 31 Days of Writing.  Check out my entire series - "31 Days of Adventure."

I am also sharing this as part of my Booking It at Life as Mom.  As it turns out the theme over there this month is Travel Books and I think my little list fits in this category.

Not every day is a good day for adventure.  As I write this, it is a rainy day the kind that soaks you the minute you step out your door.  So when you can't get out and about, why not read about adventures from the comfort of your couch.

I won't lie I really enjoy reading about others travels. Lets face facts, at this point in my life I am probably not going to hike the whole Pacific Crest Trail but I love reading about how others have done it.  Here are some reads about some real life "Adventures". I especially love those written by women and their adventures.

More Main Stream Reads
Wild by Cheryl Strayed - This is a highly acclaimed book about Cheryl's time on the Pacific Crest Trail. The movie is coming out in December and Reese Witherspoon plays Cheryl. I have mixed feelings about some of this book. But it does what all good books do it prompts discussion.

"Lost Girls: Three Friends. Four Continents. One Unconventional Detour Around the World".  The book is about three almost thirty year old girls who set off on around the world trip.  These girls left their high stress jobs in New York City and started an adventure The lost girls also have their own website.

Turn Right at Machu Picchu by Mark Adams

52 Loaves - A Half Baked Adventure by William Alexander

Off the Beaten Track

Going Some Where by Brian Benson

The Cactus Eaters by Dan White - This another book about the Pacific Crest Trail

A Blistered Kind of Love - One Couple's By Trial by Trail by Angela and Duffy Ballard- Another book about Pacific Crest Trail.  I liked this one better than Wild.

Almost Somewhere by Suzanne Roberts - This book is about The John Muir Trail and girl power.

Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven by Susan Gilman. This is a coming age book and what to do when you travel partner has a mental break down.

Hiking Through by Paul Stutzman

Becoming Odyessa by Jennifer Phaff Davis

Borderlands - Riding the Edge of America by Derek Lundy

Salt to Summit by Daniel Arnold .  This is about Daniel's adventure in Death Valley

Voluntourist by Ken Budd- Ever wanted to travel and volunteer, Ken did just that in all different locations.

Anyone have some suggestions for some more Real Life Adventure Books I should read?

Booking it - April

I am joining Life as Mom Booking It link up.  The book of the month was a The Dirty Life by Kristin Kimball.  I read that back in November.  It was an interesting read.  My review is here.  One thing I didn't add in that review was how hardworking  and how passionate these two were about the lifestyle. They are really living their passion. A book along this similar lines is Barnheart by Jenna Woginrich. This is about a single woman and how she manages some homesteading on rented property while working.  Jenna also blogs at Cold Antler Farm. I find the whole homesteading movement fascinating. A Washington Blogger, The Coupon Project, started an Adventures Homesteading series.  Check it out.

It seems like I am reading books with a similar theme - Adventurers aka Mavericks that attempt adventures with very little experience with a lot of passion and drive. I went on a mini book bender and read 3 books in 4 days at the end of March.

The first one was " The Cactus Eaters" by Dan White.  The sub title on this book is - How I lost my mind - and almost found myself - on the Pacific Crest Trail.  This was recommended on the library book buzz page as many people are waiting to read Wild by Cheryl Strayed(I think I am 56 on the wait list).  This is a story of hiking the Pacific Crest Trail which spans from the Canada to Mexico border.  Dan did it with his now ex girlfriend Allison.  Their trail names were "the Lois and Clark Expedition".  I think you have to  be a little crazy or out there to do this 2,650 mile trail.  These novices tackled this trail with some romantic ideal of what it would be and in the end the trail pretty much consumed Dan.  Dan did indeed lose his mind. I thought it was an interesting read .  Maybe I have been watching too much of that series "Out of the Wild." The Pacific Crest Trail was actually dreamed up by a Miss Catherine Montgomery of Bellingham, Washington in 1926. Bellingham, WA is the closest big town to my location.  Though Clinton Churchill Clarke is the one who made the Pacific Crest Trail possible and considered the "Father of the Pacific Crest Trail." More information about the Pacific Crest Trail can be found at Pacific Crest Trail Association.

Secondly, I read Night Road by Kirsten Hannah .  This one made me cry.  I won't lie.  The setting is also Washington. This story about teenagers and their choices will tear at your heart.  This is a box of Kleenex read.

Another Pacific Crest Trail Book, A Blistered kind of Love - One Couple's Trial by Trail by Angela and Duffy Ballard caught my eye and once again I couldn't put it down.  I think I enjoyed this better than Dan White's Book.   It was told in alternating voices of Duffy and Angela by chapter.  Maybe I like this one because this couple stayed together and seemed to have a better partnership.

Thinking About Summer Reading

Well my reading has stalled out BUT  I am super excited about Modern Mrs Darcy Summer's Reading Guide.  I couldn't wait to check out her list. Last year, I read several books from the guide. My favorite from last year was The Gown

I find my reading picks up during the summer as my world slows down a bit. Things are going to be real slow this summer I have a feeling. Check out what everyone else is reading at Modern Mrs Darcy

Since we all are staying home,we all could use a good adventure. I love a good arm chair adventure travel reads that involve women and true life adventure. Check some good true adventure reads below

Wild by Cheryl Strayed - You probably live under a rock if you haven't heard of this one. It is about her adventures of the Pacific Crest Trail. There is also a movie. This is probably the most well known book about the Pacific Crest Trail.

The Lost Girls - Three Girls leave their high pressure jobs and travel around the world.

A Blistered Kind of Love  by Angela and Duffy Ballard- A couple and their adventure's on the Pacific Crest Trail. I actually liked this one better than Wild.

Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven - What to do when your travel companion becomes undone mentally? This coming of age novel about 2 college grads and how IHOP (International House of Pancakes) inspired them to travel.

No Baggage by Clara Benson - Travel 3 weeks in Europe with just the clothes on your back.
