Star Wars Rag Quilt AND MORE

I had a chance to meet a friend of friend of a friend that moved to my area over a year ago.  This new friend is pregnant and a Star Wars fan.  So much a fan, that her nursery for her baby is decorated in Star Wars.  That got me to thinking.  You know me.  This baby needs a quilt.  So the plotting started and this is the result. I think it is subtly Star Wars.

This quilt is a mix of cotton fabric on one side and flannel on the other.  This quilt ended up ragging extremely well.  I usually choose to do the quilt entirely in flannel but I wasn't thrilled with the Star Wars flannels so I decided to do flannel in regular baby flannel. My friend Mrs Epi lent her expertise in the layout. This was probably the most difficult layout to date.

A slight hijack of this post.  There is some really cool nursery ideas and whatnot out there on pinterest for Star Wars Stuff.

Diary of a Mediocre Homemaker - Crafty

Dear Diary
I am just not handy.  I try but I am more an idea(s) person.  I can hear my husband snorting right now.  He has been the creator of many of my wild ideas. I do think I am pretty crafty.  I love to make rag quilts.  My latest creation for a baby nicknamed Wild Bill. This is the first quilt I made with a re-purposed center block from a t-shirt.  It was a challenge.

Diary of a Mediocre Homemaker - Got Skills

For my son's 13t birthday, I made him a rag quilt.

It was actually the quilt I promised him for Christmas.  I kept putting off finishing it. I blame it on the lack of true winter weather here.  I like to hunker down in the winter and craft.  I finally got it done in May.It is a known fact that I am crafty not handy.  I got skills!

****I don't think you need to have sewing skills or a crafter to be a homemaker.  I just so happen to be also a mediocre sewer.

Things I learned in April

Chuck going down the slide
at the aquatic center in Loveland CO
even though he cried the whole way
1.Vacation is good for the soul.  We got a chance to go to Colorado with the kids Spring Break.  It was the perfect low key vacation.  I haven't laughed that hard in so long.  It made me realize the weight/stress I was carrying.  It felt wonderful to leave that behind for a few days.

2. The bible verse below was on Beth Moore's Facebook page. It has been speaking to me. Many days I feel invisible and I spend my days only talking to kids for a huge portion of the day. It can be wearing and by it's very nature extremely isolating.

"The Lord talked to Hagar. She began to use a new name for God. She said to him, “You are ‘God Who Sees Me.’” She said this because she thought, “I see that even in this place God sees me and cares for me!” Genesis 16:13 -- Someone might need to hear today that He sees AND He cares. Take heart, dear friend.

3. I realized my son didn't know the Smelly Cat song from Friends.  It was my pleasure to introduce him to that gem. He said he could tell it was from the 80's. Now he has something to sing while cleaning the cat box.

4. I realized I need to be creative.  I worked on a sewing project and I remembered that sewing brings me flow.

5. Stickers are great motivation for adults too.  We actually give stickers out for those who complete their bible study homework.  I know it is silly for adults but effective.  I am using them for my walking workout.  I am giving myself a sticker for completing my walking workout.  It is a great visual on my calendar and it feels good to stick a sticker.

A Girly Rag Quilt

The Front
The Diva and I created this quilt.  We worked on it before the school year ended.  I finally did the finer details. I wanted to give her something before she moved.  Her and her family are moving to a nearby town.  We worked at this together.  I think it turned out pretty awesome.

Purrfect Rag Quilt

IT has been a while since I made a rag quilt.  This one was a struggle mainly because of me and my attitude.  Everything they say about your attitude and it effecting the quality of your work is true. About every wrong thing happened in the construction of this quilt but I fixed it.I have a negative feeling toward the recipient but I was able to overcome it.  Because it was right thing to do!

Gift Revealed

I was working on two rag quilts right before Christmas. I was finished literally two days before Christmas. It was really hard to keep these a secret especially the one for Mrs Epi as she was there when I purchased most of the fabric. I only did 4 rag quilts in 2009. The one above is the one I did for Mrs Epi complete with bird and flower appliques. Here is a link to see the fabrics up close.Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of the one I did for Nonna.

Quilting Inspiration

Winter weather is upon us here near the northern border. It is wet and windy. So instead of doing all the really necessary projects for the coming holiday season, I decided to start a rag quilt. I saw the above bird flannel at JoAnn's and knew I had to make a quilt involving that fabric. The picture above is the layout of the fabrics I am using for this quilt. One thing to another and I am doing some appliqued blocks as well. Did I mention I am hosting Thanksgiving dinner at my house and the quilt I am working on has no intented recipient. Why can't I be inspired when I have a clean house and no responsibilities? LOL

Sew Expo

On Sunday, Mrs Epi and I ventured to the Sew Expo. I have been talking about this forever but we finally went. Wow! Talk about sewing overload. We were a little disappointed. It seemed to be more geared to the professional sewer not the novices like us. Truly, I think we wanted to be inspired and we walked away not feeling that. But it sure was fun to look. Embroidery Machines and Needle Felting seem to be really big trends.

The quilt pictured above is a variation on a rag quilt. The little squares I thought would shrink up not rag as much but it turned out pretty good. Instead of an an "X" through the square. I made a square.

The back was done in blue and green flannel

Red Rag Quilt

Front
I finally completed this baby quilt. I think it turned out pretty good. The black block is actually a black and white polka dot. It doesn't show up to well in the picture. Hopefully this is unisex enough, as the Mom to be doesn't know the sex of the baby.

1st Quilt of the New Year

I have been an absent blogger this week. I completed this very girly baby quilt for a neighbor. She is due at the end of the week. I have purchased the fabric for another baby quilt so I hope to cut that out soon. It is going to be red. It will be the first red one that I have done.

Gifts Exposed

At long last, I can show you the two rag quilts I made as Christmas gifts. The one above is the Polyester Princess (aka sister) and the one below is my Mom's. I am looking forward to making two baby rag quilts in the new year. My quilt holders are the two man wrecking crew.

Free Time

It has been so nice to have some free time without kids this past week. The kids have been in VBS in the evening and the Giant Man Child has been out of town. The kids have been loving the Power Lab themed VBS and I have been enjoying a few quiet evenings. I have been feeling crafty. Here is the results of my craftiness. This is a baby rag quilt.

Happy Birthday to Me!

It has been a most excellent day so far. The sun is out for right now which is a welcome sight after those 62 mph winds and rain. I thought I would show off my most recent completed rag quilt in honor of my Birthday. It is very purple. It is me hiding behind the quilt.
