Putting the Garden to Bed

Here in New Mexico, it has been still warm, but the lows are going to be in the high 30s. The time has come to put the garden to bed. Most of my cut flowers are in pots.

Most of my plants are in containers. I plan to overwinter my geranium on my back enclosed porch along with some succulents. The oasis is about to get planty.

I am collecting dahlia seeds. I do plan to save my current dahlia tubers.  I grew some of them from seed.  There isn't anything super special, but I thought I would save the tubers. I collected the seeds too.

I made kinda of a mess, but I have some seeds to try. I like experimenting. A paper plate is better for this than just a paper towel as the petals really do blow away easily.

Ghost Story - Podcast - I have started listening to this. Investigative journalist investigates a ghost that was in his childhood home. Not scary and very crime forward. Interesting true story.

Silent Walking - Why does this crack me up?  Well, I actually lived in a time before phones and podcasts.  I myself prefer to walk with a friend.  Some of my best conversations have been on walks with my best friend and funniest too. I have done Rage Walking. That is something I can get behind.

Seeing this made me cry, a good cry. Coffee is clearly my love language. My husband was gone on a work trip. Our routine every morning is him making coffee. He left me a coffee set up - actually two. This made me so happy.  I really don't function well before coffee. It was the ultimate kindness.

52 Ancestors - Digging Deeper

The 52 ancestors in 52 weeks prompt was Digging Deeper.  This part of Amy Crow Johnson's writing about 52 ancestors in 52 weeks.

I keep circling back to Oklahoma and specifically Oklahoma politics.  I found another connection to Oklahoma politician.  See my previous post on Joseph Colburn Pringey. I found a mention in my 4th great grandmothers Find a Grave blurb that James Mountain Inhofe, US Senator and Congressman, was related to her. This got me curious. I decided to see if I could connect myself to the former senator.

Abigail Appolonia Rhoads Pringey was born November 29, 1776, and died February 12, 1866. (find a grave) Abigail married John Pringey.  They resided in Somerset County Pennsylvania for their entire lives. Abigail is my 4th Great Grandmother on my maternal side.

I made a chart.  It is very homemade. Below is how I think I am related to James "Jim" Inhofe.

If I am related it is very distantly - James "Jim" Mountain Inhofe is possibly my 4th cousin. Jame's parents were Perry Dyson Inhofe and Blanche Mountain. I am related to him through his mother's maternal side.

Jim is a very successful politician that retired this year. Below are some of the positions that he has held.

Wordy Wednesday

Whenever I see the phrase, "Misery loves company." I think of my 5th grade teacher who had a Ziggy poster which said, "C'mon in .... misery loves company." Mrs. Williams was always a bit scary to me. She made us take dictation with our spelling. The other 5th grade teacher was much more popular, Mr Hedyt.  She was a smoker.  Unfortunately, she died of lung cancer.

Doesn't everyone clean out the dust in their storage shed with a leaf blower or is that a New Mexico thing?

Deep Thoughts

The Gain and The Gap

The wins here in New Mexico seem so hard fought. I was thinking this in relation to our shop being built. This past week we had our final inspection. A scrapbook influencer was talking about how we focus more on the gap than the gain. This phrase has been rattling around in my brain. It seems like we have been working on this shop forever. So, I am going to tell you about the gain.  I will do a post likely next week all about the gap on the shop.

The Gain: There is a building where no building existed. The building is connected to the electric. We now can get rid of our paid storage. My husband has a dedicated space for his projects and his woodworking. He has been making do. We have a place for storage. This is a remarkable gain.

Dead People Files - Killers of the Flower Moon Connection

Sometimes when I read nonfiction my genealogy definitely relates to the topic. I have been reading Killers of the Flower Moon with the Sharon Says So Book Club.  I was wondering if any genealogy connections existed.  Some of my ancestors did have a connection to Oklahoma.

I did have a Great Great Grand Aunt that settled in Oklahoma in the early 1900s Abigail Martin.

My Great Great Grandmother Candance Liston might have made a claim in Oklahoma/Texas in the early 1900. She never resided there.  Her son, John P Liston, also made a homesteading claim too in the same general area.

The closest and not very close connection to Osage/ Oklahoma is Joseph Colburn Pringey. He is a 1st cousin 4 times removed to me.

Joseph Colburn Pringey or as people called him "Uncle Joe" was a mover and shaker in Oklahoma in the early 1900s. He as a pioneer homesteader, loan and insurance salesman, Postmaster, 4-minute man, Congressman, County Clerk, farmer.

Joseph Pringey homestead near Chandler, Oklahoma when the Sac and Fox lands opened for settlement in 1891. Joseph made the run with his brother, George. Joseph was also a Loan and Insurance Salesman during this time. Joseph was the first Postmaster of Kendrick, Oklahoma. As a Republican he was a member of the Oklahoma Territorial Senate in 1893. Jospeh attended the Republican Nation convention in 1900. Joseph was the County Clerk of Lincoln County, Oklahoma from 1912 to 1920. He was active politically at both the state and national levels. During World War I, he served as a 4 Minute Man Speaker.  He gave 4-minute speeches at theatres, churches, lodges etc. in Oklahoma. These were basically public service announcements about the war. Joseph was elected as a Republican for the 4th District to the 67th Congress. He defeated Tom McKeown a Democrat.  He served on 3 committees, Expenditures in the Department of Labor, Pensions, and Public Buildings and Grounds. Joseph was a strong advocate for compensation for soldiers who had served in World War 1 and called for a tariff to protect the farmer and laborer. Joseph was unsuccessful in his run for the 68th Congress. Tom McKeown won that race. Joseph returned to agricultural pursuits.

Despite much research, I know very little about Joseph's personal life. Joseph Colburn Pringey was born to George and Effie Pringey in Pennsylvania in 1858.  Colburn is his mother's maiden name and Joseph's middle name. Joseph was one of nine born to this union. Effie was George's second wife. His parents came to Iowa in the late 1860's. The family is shown living in Iowa in the 1870's. Jospeh was educated in rural schools. He attended business college in Sedalia, Missouri in 1870s. Joseph was fairly educated for his time. However, he is quoted as saying he graduated "with distinction from the university of hard knocks" in the Washington Post (June 26, 1921) in an article titled," Present Congress Has Many Distinctive Members".

Joseph was married three times. He first married Anna Phillips who died in 1884 in Iowa. Then he married Zona Maxson.  Lastly, he married Amanda "Joesphine" Young Harp who was at least 20 years younger than himself. It is known that Josephine and Joseph continued to be involved in local affairs after he lost bid to be reelected to Congress. Jospeh was a Mason, Odd Fellow, and Knight of the Pythias. He died February 11, 1935, of a heart attack. He was interred in Oak Park Cemetery in Chandler, Oklahoma.

***Connection to Osage Indians and the Reign of Terror

While he probably did not engage directly with the Osage Indians. It is most likely he knew what was happening to the Osage and their headrights. Congress very much thought the Osage were becoming too wealthy because of oil profits.  He was in the House of Representatives during the Osage Reign of Terror where at the very least 24 wealthy Indians were murdered for their headrights. There seemed to be a widespread conspiracy to deprive the Osage of these lucrative headrights. While Osage Indians had headrights to the oil all their wealth was controlled by white guardians. The 4th District of Oklahoma does not include Osage lands.  It is more in the southern part of Oklahoma. Joseph represented the 4th District of Oklahoma in the House of Representatives.

What don't I know about Joseph Pringey?

One of his obituaries mentioned a son and a daughter.  I can find no known record of either. I am curious to see his local obituary and feel like that may shed some light on whether not he was a parent. I also didn't find his last wife Josephine obituary either. There is no mention of children in the census. I would love to know some more personal information about him.

How I am related to Joseph Pringey?

This is where I draw this really great chart. Sometimes charting it out makes me see it clearer. Basically, Joseph Colburn Pringey is a cousin to my 2nd Great Grandmother Candance Pringey Liston.

What I read October

I am linking up with Modern Mrs. Darcy's Quick Lit.  Check out what everyone else is reading.

My month has been dominated by the book below.

Killers of the Flower Moon by David Gann

This is a narrative nonfiction book about the Osage Indian Tribe and the Reign of Terror and the birth of the FBI. During the Reign of Terror, 24 Osage were murdered by various means for their Headrights.  The Osage owned the mineral rights for property rich in oil. There was a giant conspiracy by non-Indians to kill them for their headrights.

I learned a great deal about this event which I wasn't aware of.  David Gann does an excellent job of telling this story with accuracy.  I read this for a book club I belong to. This is definitely a book that needs to be discussed.

Of course, there is movie that is coming out on the 20th of October. It is 3 1/2 hours long .

If you are interested in what is happening now with headrights as the Osage wish to get those back that aren't owned by natives. Check out the podcast below and also the Pioneer Woman Connection

My son seriously wants that blow up dragon. That thing is also expensive.

 Inappropriate Thoughts

My husband had surgery last week and had a carpal tunnel release done.  Now he has had both hands done.  You can hear some really interesting stuff in hospital waiting rooms. The guy in the recovery with my husband talked constantly about cooking and food. I don't think he ever stopped once he was awake. He was a genuine farmer/rancher. He came in with the cowboy hat and overalls. All the food talk made me seriously hungry.

Deep Thoughts

I am a person with a loud mind. Yes, one of those people who have whole conversations in their head. This Friday I kind of took the day off.  Between the real people conversations of this week and the voices in my head I just needed a day to be quiet.  If you need some quiet, I hope you find it.

Our NM Solar Experience

It has been a very hot summer.  Back in March, we looked into putting solar panels on our roof.  We had a solar assessment done and contracted with Titan. They never showed up or did anything. So, in May we went with a different contractor and in July we had panels on our roof. That was great but they aren't hooked up with anything. So much for harnessing the power of the sun. The only thing they have harnessed is my anger. There are so many boxes for this set up.

It is now October, and we are waiting. I guess this is like a five-step process unfortunately we were stopped on step 3 for a couple months. This is what happens when you don't pay your subs. Now we are stopped on step 4. You see that piece of cardboard that is in that hole in a box. That is for our solar meter.  Guess who installed the wrong box - Yep, the solar company. Guess what we have to start paying for. We will get reimbursed, but this is the never-ending process. Hey LUMIO you suck! Your customer service is very lackluster too.

We aren't powered by solar. We are powered by Jack!  Sometimes you just have to laugh so you don't cry.

Gothic Coffee Halloween Shelfie

I changed it up a bit this year. I added Spanish moss to coffee mugs and coffee pots. I also have the skeleton hands. Hands from the Dollar Tree.  The Fortune sign is also from the Dollar Tree.  I really like it. Now if I can only get the bottom shelf from being a dumping ground for my family.

The quote above is from Brave Enough by Cheryl Strayed also the author of Wild. I edited the swear in this quote.

In part this quote, makes me mad. I would ask better questions if I had better information. Since I have arrived in the Land of Entrapment I have never ever in my life asked so many questions.  I think as humans we tend to ask questions and only accept answers that fit our narrative. I could do better, and this quote has been bouncing around in my brain.

Yes, I am a middle-aged woman who just really like Dame Lillard. I am so pleased that he has found a new home with the Bucks.

Is it me or do the deer up above look possessed. I will probably watch the Bucks, but I am not going intentionally listen to his Rap music. I am still a Trail Blazer fan but dang it stings to lose Dame.

Deep Thoughts

I listened to a very short Podcast on knowing how to walk out of the room.  The podcast is The Next Right Thing.  Emily Freeman has written a book on that comes out in March 2024. I refer to Dame Lillard in my inappropriate thought NBA player that realizes he is not in the right room. Dame outgrew this room. He played for the Trailblazers for 11 years.  He long had said he would stay with the Trailblazers for his career.  Despite giving it his best effort, he realized that he needed to leave.

I think we can all relate to not fitting in or outgrowing a place.

Pallet Pumpkin Lanterns

I was inspired by the cedar fence post pumpkin lanterns.  I am more of a do with what you have kind of gal.  My husband actually did all the work.  I am the idea person.  Ha Ha That is a skill that I am amazing at.

He took a pallet apart.  He used a planer to mill the wood to the same size.  He has been borrowing a laser cutter, so he used it to cut out the face.

This all the stuff the average crafter does not have.  We did not purchase any wood or materials for this project. I linked below some more average crafting pumpkin lanterns made with cedar fencing.

I asked him to make them to be able to nest for storage purposes. The stems have magnets so they can be removed for storage purposes. He countersunk the magnets.
