Rhett and Scarlett

Scarlett and Rhett

We have had our rescue pups for over a year.  We kept their humane society names.  I did try to figure out their real names but that didn't really work out.  Scarlett aka Scar will answer to Cutie. Scar is the boss of this partnership. She will let you know about things and dances for her dinner.

kinda mad about the bunny ears

Rhett the toothless wonder (missing front teeth) is pretty laid back and prefers to be outside.  He likes to growl at Scarlett if she gets in his space when he has a toy.

Rhett was a hater about the ears

This is true.  See photo below.  You got to be able to put three fingers through the handle. I explained this to a lady in the thrift store.  I will fight you on this - lol.

Inappropriate Thoughts

I had an insurance company tell me I am right. Well it wasn't in so many words, but I will take it.  Unfortunately, it didn't solve any of my insurance woes.  See Deep Thoughts.

Deep Thoughts

(basically, a vent)

I don't understand why insurance companies and doctor's offices think I should be in charge of my son's insurance.  Do I look qualified for this kind of thing?  I think not.  I have been on a wild insurance ride against my will this week. It involved multiple medical insurance companies and letters, calls and denials.  Just when I thought I got it fixed something else would pop up.  My son makes no phone calls but signs for himself. This just makes it complicated. I handle all the administrative paperwork for his life. If a neurotypical person has a hard time navigating this circus how does a disabled person do it. After all the calls and whatnot everything is not resolved and just seems to lend to more calls. It stresses me out.

Wordy Wednesday

This seems to be a lesson I have to learn over and over again.  It actually just doesn't apply to autistic people but others in generally.  You need to meet people where they are.

What I Read in April

I am linking up with Modern Mrs Darcy's Quick Lit. Check out what everyone else is reading.

Jimmy Bluefeather by Kim Heacox

I am reading this as part of a backlist challenge. I loved this book. It is very Pacific Northwest.  It is about a grandson who hurts his leg and his dream of being in the NBA and Grandfather, Keb, who is afraid that his culture is being lost. Keb is part Norwegian and part Tlingit native. It is set in the village of Jinkaat in Southeast Alaska. They build a canoe and sail it to Crystal Bay which is now a protected bay. There is a good bit of family drama and maybe just a few too many characters but a good story.

Deep Thoughts

Jen Hatmaker had a great blog on change.  I think it is a worthy read. It got me thinking a lot about the changes we need to make sometimes that are self-directed.  How hard it to make those changes.

Garden Rabbit Hole

My husband and I have been walking our neighborhood.  I had noticed this bush with yellow flowers in several yards.  Yes, I am the crazy lady that takes pictures of other people's plants.  It is very awkward. You got to love the fat dog in the above picture. Google lens is awesome for plant identification.

Turns out it is a Lady Banks rose which blooms for about 4 weeks and is thornless. The funny thing is one of my favorite Instagrammers did a reel on this rose - Wesley Farmshenigans

This also led me down the rabbit hole of longer blooming yellow roses. Then enters popcorn drift roses.

I kinda need both right?

Trash Talk

We didn't pick up trash on Easter. We picked up trash on the following day. My husband had high hopes of finding left behind Easter Eggs. We found one or should I say. I found one.  Rather tame in the trash department but we did find two mismatched socks. We also got thanked by a Parks person. That was a first.

Deep Thoughts

I love a week with new beginnings and good news. This week has been filled with that kind of of stuff.  My sister is getting baptized this Sunday. In addition, my niece got engaged.

Operation Fun - Lincoln After Dark

Lincoln NM is a New Mexico Historical Site. This is the epi center of the Lincoln County Wars.  It is also a place where Billy the Kid was made famous.  The town is filled with historic buildings. I believe there are 17 buildings.

Lincoln After Dark was our first-time exploring, Lincoln. We stopped at most of the buildings - Visitor Center, Store, Post Office, Doctor's Home, Courthouse, and Church. They had actors out telling their part of the Lincoln story. I didn't get a lot of pictures. It was a unique experience.  More history here.

Turkey Vultures

Last week we noticed Turkey Vultures circling around.  On our walk last week, we spotted these vultures in a neighborhood tree. Last year the vultures were here about the same time. I believe these are migrating as the temperatures rise down south.  There were around 20 vultures in various pine trees spread over a couple of yards.  A couple days ago there were only 5 in the tree. It is fascinating.  Some turkey vultures or turkey buzzards do migrate.  It is a bit unnerving to walk under these pines and see so many in one area.  Last year they were here for a couple of weeks.

52 Weeks of Wellness

The walks continue. We did the library anniversary scavenger hunt. We walked the downtown searching for clues.

Trash Talk

Well last weekend was the weekend before Spring Break.

Who amongst you has lost a sock and their Mom's Mini Van floormat to the middle row? Your Mom is pissed. Apparently, there was a pre–Spring Break ranch dressing fueled rager in the parking lot with every local fast-food restaurant was represented.  A boat load of ranch was consumed by the number of packets covering the parking lot. Only 3 empty alcoholic drinks were found of the hard Monster variety highly unusual for this park. This must have been the pre-teen crowd.  All of this to say you only left us 50 cents in dirty money. Dirty Money would make an awesome band name.

Operation Fun: Brantley Lake

The other day we decided to stop at this New Mexico State Park that we pass frequently. Lake Brantley has a large dam.  We did a bit of exploring. We took a hike.

We did not see a Texas Jack Rabbit. The high desert flowers are just starting to bloom.

We also saw this graffiti that was pretty interesting by the Pecos River.

Easter Shelfie

Just a little Easter shelfie. My Mom sent home with me some of my embroidery. These rabbits are like over 40 years old. I am old. I thought they added a little something to the shelfie. I thrifted the floral plate behind the rabbit from a local thrift shop.  The ceramic eggs I thrifted long ago. Not entirely satisfied with this shelfie but it was fun. The top shelf needs more work.

One of my favorite things to do with my kids and those I watched was to have a Leprechaun Gold Hunt.  I kinda of miss it.  Everyone knows I love a good adventure/hunt. One year I even had a kid make a Leprechaun beard.

trash talk!

Almost every Sunday, we pick up trash at the skate park while our son scooter's the skate bowl.  I thought it would be funny to write a summary of what I thought happened there that week based on the trash we picked up.

Overy hydrated teenagers missing socks practiced first aid all over the park with an extra-large package of Band-Aids using condiments as fake blood except no one used the sacred Allsup's branded taco sauce.

52 weeks to better health

I have been walking and walking with my new coach my husband. We walked to get burritos. We walked to get coffee. We walked to fill a jug of water. It feels good. The other day we walked one way to get tea and another direction to get breakfast burritos in the rain.

Seed Starting Madness

I have started some of my seeds. My last frost date is around April 15-18th.  I started Black Eye Susan's.  They take the longest to germinate. I am using jiffy pellets and dollar tree green houses.

I also started some dahlia seeds from the Floret Bee's Choice Dahlias I grew last year. I am calling them Heather's Extra Special Dahlia Seeds.  I am curious if they will even germinate.  I did some with the baggie and paper towel and some in my dollar tree greenhouse.

What I Read March

I am linking up to Modern Mrs Darcy's Quick Lit.  Check out what everyone else is reading.

I feel like my reading has been taken up almost completely with my book club book.

Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson

This isn't a book I would typically pick up. I like Isabel Wilkerson's descriptive writing that forces me to slow down for my reading style. I started this during Black History month.  I am learning a lot about something I know too little about. I usually take notes on book club notes on my kindle scribe, but this has forced me to take pen to paper. This book follows 3 people and their various migration routes. This book is a long one at 543 pages.

The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd

This is part of the backlist challenge I am taking part in. This book was published in 2014. It tells the story of the Grimke sisters inspired by Sarah Grimke based loosely on their life stories and the slaves that they grew up with in Charleston, SC. The Grimke sisters were the first female abolition agents and earliest of the feminists. I thought it was an interesting book.
