Dead People Files - Revolutionary Ancestors Part 1

I am reading a book called The Revolutionary Samuel Adams.  It got me to thinking about my revolutionary ancestors. On both sides of my tree, I have Revolutionary War Soldiers.  I wanted to talk about a Revolutionary Soldier from the Lendman side of my tree. I don't have many relatives on this side of the tree who weren't German Immigrants or Quakers. So, I was suprised to find a Revolutionary Soldier on this side of my tree.  Abel Sutliff Jr is my 7th Great Grandfather.

Abel Sutliff Jr

Abel was born to Sarah Ford and Abel Sutliff on August 23, 1751, in Litchfield County, Connecticut.  Abel married Charity Barber on the 15th of November 1770 in Waterbury, Connecticut.  Abel would fight in the Revolutionary War.  Abel was a private, under Captain John Lewis, Jr. 4th Company, Col William Douglas' 5th Battalion, Brig General James Wadsworth's Brigade, 1776, Waterbury, Connecticut. The main battles that Abel participated in were The Battle of Long Island, also known as the Battle of Brooklyn - June 1776 and the Battle of White Plains October 1776.  Abel was discharged Dec 25, 1776.  Abel and Charity had 9 children. They had 3 sons and 6 daughters.  Abel died on May 15, 1799, in Huntington Mills, Pennsylvania, at the age of 47.

Grave Stone Inscription
In Memory of Abel Sutliff who departed this life May 15, 1799 in the 47th year of his life.

interesting fact
Huntington Mills, the town, was named after Samuel Huntington a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Wordy Wednesday

I consider this my life motto along with "I have questions".  I say this a lot. It isn't a magic bullet but either we find a way, or we find alternate route to our desired outcome. Saying this doesn't mean it is easy.  It also means to me that it possible that the desired outcome isn't for me, or I need more assistance to reach the desired outcome.

Nonna got this sign for me.  I have it hanging by my desk. It is a great reminder.

House to Home - Floating Shelves

Before Shelves

I don't think I have ever shown my eldest son's room.  He wanted to have some shelving. He has a lot of figurines and knick knacks. So, my husband made these floating shelves.  The design is based on Ana White's best floating shelves. I am so glad my husband is handy.

Inappropriate Thoughts

Had an interesting conversation at the grocery store with a guy looking for scallions. The little grocery store we were at didn't have them. We ended up asking him what he was making.  Evidently, he had looked up a fancy recipe for squirrel and rabbit stew.

Another grocery store story, manicotti is hard to find in our town. We visited the two grocery stores in our town, and none were to be found. We had to go to a bigger town to find it. Guess there aren't many Italians in New Mexico. We needed them to make smokin shotgun shells - meat stuffed manicotti wrapped in bacon and smoked. Below is the picture before cooking.

Deep Thoughts

Well, this weekly roll is short because I am having a lot of eyestrain, so I am trying to limit my close-up computer work. My eye has let me know I have overdone it. Hopefully next week will be better.

Calling All Plant People

These lovely basketweave planters are $5 clearance at my Walmart.  Turns out Walmart has quite a bit of cheap planters currently and are putting out their new pots.  So, if you are repotting or just need some new planters.  Check out the Walmart. The Frugal Homemaker has a great post on Instagram on the new pots.

What I Read January

Hello, Booking It 2023.  I am linking up with Modern Mrs Darcy.  Check out what everyone else is reading.

 Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

Technically finished this at the end of December. This true tale is haunting in so many ways. Olympic Runner Louis Zamperini turned soldier. He is a soldier who is shot down during WW2.  Survives on a lifeboat for 46 days only to be captured by Japanese.  He is imprisoned by the Japanese.  Then finally liberated by United States. Louis struggles at home but is saved by Billy Graham.  This is an incredible true tale and reads like fiction. You can't help but like the spirit of Louis Zamperini and be horrified by the treatment that Japanese POWs suffered at the hands of their captors.

Deep Thoughts

Our dog, Tigger, passed away Friday morning. He was by far the loudest dog I have ever owned. We adopted him from the humane society. We used to live next to an elementary school and I swear that dog knew the bell schedule. There is nothing more that he enjoyed than barking at recess. Tigger also didn't mind riding in cars. He went a lot of places.  He did get called a hippo once in an elevator.  I don't think he minded. Tigger was a big black dog with a loudmouth. Tigger had a lot to say.

52 Ancestors - Favorite Photo

The 52 Ancestors in 52 weeks prompt was favorite photo. I am also using this prompt in my dead people files project. See the bottom of post for more information.

Well I don't have a lot of old photos but most of them are scans of photos of the Liston Family, but I always like wedding photos.  The photo below is of Joseph Liston and Lulu Howard.  I have written about Joseph Liston but never his wife Lulu Howard

Lulu Pearl Howard Liston

Lulu was born to Willis and Kimetia Howard on October 16, 1873, in Adams Illinois.  She was the oldest out of 5 children.  The Howard family moved to Cass County Iowa between 1875 and 1880. Lulu came with her parents by covered wagon to Bear Grove Township in Cass County Iowa when she was a small child. The 1880 census has them living in Union, Cass County, Iowa.  Lulu was 7 years old.

Lulu married Joseph Butler Liston on October 24, 1894. Lulu had just turned 21 years old.  Joseph was 29 years old. She was rural schoolteacher prior to her marriage. Joseph was a farmer.

Photo above
Lulu, Joseph ,Marvel, Ronald(sitting) and Velma

Lulu and Joseph had 3 children. The oldest was Velma then Ronald and last but not least was Marvel. Lul's mother, Kimetia,  died in 1915 and in the 1920 and 1930 census Willis Howard, Lulu's father, is living with them.  In the 1930 census, the family is no longer farming, and Joseph is the janitor at the local school. Willis B Howard passes away in 1934.

Lulu would die in Cass County Iowa at age 68 years old, 11 months, and 4 days on September 20, 1942.  The official cause of death was rupture of the stomach. It was also noted that she had breast cancer.  She was buried in Newlons Grove Cemetary outside of Cumberland Iowa.

I am also using this in my Dead People Files Project. I made a simple scrapbook page using project life that contains most of the pertinent biographical information

Dead People Files Project

I have started a new tradition of choosing a birthday project or a yearlong project. Last year was 50 sunsets and sunrises.  I decided this year to choose a genealogy project.  I am calling it the Dead People Files.

Goals

Research 13 ancestors and present that information on the blog. I will be using some of the 52 ancestors in 52-week writing prompts. Below is the start of the ancestors that I will for sure be researching. (4/15)

Lulu Pearl Howard Liston (Hoyt/Liston Tree)

    John Lendman (Lendman Tree)

Eliza Greene Perkins Doane (Hoyt/Liston Tree)

    John Christian Brenneman (Hoyt/Liston)

    Ida Shadwell Lendman (Lendman)

Do a DNA test on myself - I am interested in learning more about this

Improve my genealogy research - I plan on reading some genealogy books that are from the required reading list from the BYU and Boston University Genealogy programs. I think a good goal would be at least 3 books

Do one genealogy field trip? I think this might be open to interpretation

find a better way to share or present my genealogy research

write better genealogy stories.

scan more photos and become more proficient in this

Operation Valentine

Just a tiny sneak peek of my valentine for 2023. It might seem early to think about Valentine's Day cards, but I am actually behind.  I remail my cards through Loveland Colorado and will need to have them mailed there by at least the first week of February if not a bit earlier.

I literally had a dream about Valentine Cards.  I abandoned my earlier idea and I literally had 4 really good ideas.  Last year's card below.

I want to encourage you to send good mail.  Remailing valentines through Loveland Colorado is easy and it doesn't have to be a homemade valentine.  More Details here

House to Home - Valentine Shelfie

Too Soon? This is all stuff minus the canister from my Loveland/Valentine collection. I am just so so with the current set up.

Glass Canister from the dollar spot at Target - Large canister $5 and 2 smaller canister set $5.  I like the little hearts at top.

Ham and Cheese Foldovers - these were delicious and easy. However the price of puff pastry has gone up so not so economical. I guess some people are having a hard time finding puff pastry.

Southwest Road Trip - This sounds fun and could be really really outdoorsy.

Cheapest and Most Expensive Places to buy a house outside a National Park Should we all move to be near New River Gorge in West Virginia.

Inappropriate Thoughts

15 Rounds has a different connotation now, right.  I am referring to the speaker race for the house. I thought it was funny my book club book, The Revolutionary Samuel Adams, for Sharon Says So had the above quote on the chapter we were assigned. I have lots of thoughts about this both positive and negative such as how can the Republicans not have it together. Would I stand up for my beliefs and not vote for the status quo? I once again remember how difficult and messy a democracy is.

I was also consumed with the news about the Buffalo Bill player, Darmar Hamlin injury. My best friend's son is studying sport medicine who is like a nephew to me. There is no doubt the quick action by the sports medicine people saved his life. This is definitely a WTF moment.

Lastly my husband is a law enforcement officer. Bullet Proof vests save lives. WEAR YOUR VEST. It is most likely your agency's policy.  People are not bullet proof.  Border Patrol Agent Shot. You have no idea how close to home this hit.

Deep Thoughts

I liked this idea about a more list by EliseJoy so I made my own.

I believe I used this quote in a Valentine card I made one year.  This was inspired by the SundayPaper on Instagram. Quote is from Ralph Waldo Emerson

Weekly Roll - New Year, New One Little Word

 Happy 2023!

I am a big fan of the One Little Word.  Last year I chose " Pursue".  This turned out to be a family word as we helped my husband pursue a job opportunity in New Mexico.  This year I choose " BUILD".  I literally want to help build a shop for my husband but also build on some opportunities. Interesting enough the random word of the generator gave me this word below.
