1984 Backpack Camping Trip
Black Forest Baptist Camp

I heard that a friend from Baptist Youth Fellowship (BYF) The picture above shows a lot of our group plus some extras. A lot of my teen years were spent with these people. I realized I didn't have a picture of her.  I always looked up to her. She was a year older than me. We also attended the same High School. She was bright, adventurous, and mature.  RIP Laura.

Wordy Wednesday

Last night I attended the author meeting for "Madness" with Antonia Hylton with book club, The Governerds.  I firmly believe that this story chose Antonia.  She is a fantastic speaker, and I think this book should be required reading for those working in the mental health field. She had so many things to share.  This quote hit me - see below.

Side note registration is open for the next semester of Sharon Says So Governerds Book Club.

What I Read August

I am linking up with Modern Mrs Darcy and Quick Lit.  Check out what everyone else is reading.

Madness by Antonia Hylton.

This was a book club selection. Crownsville State Hospital was built by the inmates of the asylum. Early on since the beginning the patients supported the hospital by growing food and being hired out to local farms as labor. There was really no treatment other than work for those who were mentally ill especially those of color.  Often those with minor petty crimes who were not ill were sent to Crownsville.  It was the boogey man story that colored people told their children - "If you don't behave, Crownsville will come get you." Even as metal health improved Crownsville was under funded and often acted as a place of incarnation rather than a place to help. There are truths that still hold true today. One that mental health care is stigmatized it doesn't matter your race and secondly how mental health care is administered for people of color is not of the same standard of care. How we threat those with mental health issues has not evolved far enough.

Over 2000 patients died at Crownsville their stories deserved to be told. This is certainly not an uplifting read. Antonia did a wonderful job of discussing the intersection of race and mental health. Ther is more work that needs to be done, and part of the work is raising awareness. Lastly, this book hits close to home as there are people in my life who struggle with mental illness. The struggle to get quality care is real.

Bullet Pencil - 52 Ancestors

I have been routinely searching Ebay looking for items from places where my ancestors have lived. I have searched many places. Recently I searched Cumberland, Iowa.  I found a bullet pencil with my Great Uncle Hilary Herman Hoyt's corn shelling business. I decided to purchase.

Hilary Herbert Hoyt was born Valentine's Day 1893 to James "Jim" Mitchell Hoyt and Clara Ferguson. Hilary was the oldest son and second born. He grew up in Cass County, Iowa. He married Velma Liston on Jan 6, 1914. * Velma and her sister both married Hoyt's. Marvel's husband, Delbert Devere "Dee" and Hilary were 1st cousins. Together Velma and Hilary they had one daughter Thora Nadine born April 13, 1914. Hilary was a farmer and later had a specialty corn shelling business and grain hauling business. The bullet pencil is an advertising pencil. Hilary would die September 21, 1978. Hilary was 85 years old. Hilary and Velma are buried in Newlon's Grove.

I did meet my Great Hilary.  I visited Hilary's and Velma's house. I remember the there was a door to the stairs for the 2nd floor in their house.  I also thought it was weird that they had peanut butter on their toast for breakfast. Hilary was missing some fingers on one hand from a woodworking accident? Granted I was probably only 5 or 6 years old.  It is funny what we remember.   I have many more memories of my Great Aunt Velma.

Last year, my best friend was getting ready for her daughter's wedding.  I loved being a part of this celebration.  I also loved playing in my friend's garden. Her dahlia garden is simply magical.

Inappropriate Thoughts

It is sad that I am waiting for the temperature to go under 100 to do my evening watering. I really would like to be 80 but I am not staying up till midnight to hand water. I will thank my husband for laying a lot of drip line, so it has really limited the number of things I have to hand water.

Trash Talk

Last Sunday we did our usual trash patrol in the park. It was our son's birthday, and he wanted to scooter. However, there was homeless person sleeping in the bowl, so he skated around the splash pad. We did check to see if the person laying in the skate bowl was breathing. It was weird and can't be comfortable.

Can I Grow It?

Red Yucca

If it can grow in the Walmart parking lot, I think I have a chance of growing it. The seeds are wild found in little pods.

These seeds took a while to germinate. That makes sense because the seed has a very hard covering.

Side Quest - Carlsbad NM Museum

I had to drive to Carlsbad to get my windshield replaced so my son also tagged along. We decided to visit the Carlsbad Museum.  What a little treasure!

Horse and Buggy

They had some amazing art and I asked my son if he had any pictures and he sent me these.  Evidently these are the names of the pieces he liked.

There are a number of sculptures outside.

Back To School

temp earlier in the week

Well back to school doesn't really pertain to me anymore.  I have no kids in school, nor I am in school.  School starts here today.  It will be triple digits, so I don't envy the students or teachers.

statue of Bulldog "Mack" - Artesia High School Mascot

I do like to spend August as a reset and a chance to prepare for a fall that I can enjoy.  Things I hope to accomplish this fall are as follows

buy a mower - I am tired of paying to have my grass weeds mowed

go on a friend trip.

attend genealogy conference in November hosted by the Wilson Cobb - The event space was flooded out last year, so fingers crossed no rain.

do more photo scanning - I have worked at this off and on.

clean up guest room

some side quests

finalize valentine - I know we are nowhere close to February but already feeling behind

catch up on all preventive appointments - dentist, eye exam etc...

I find it is helpful to declare these projects as it holds me more accountable.

Deep Thoughts

Both my son and mother have a birthday this weekend. They are so different but so alike. They both want things their way. They both have systems they want everyone to use.  They both love going out to dinner. Both are out of the box thinkers and creatives. Happy Happy Birthday!
