Sometimes a honeypot is a welcome sight but when it is outside your dining room window it is urban blight.

Weekly - Memorial Day Edition
Well I am posting this later than I intended. I hope we all take time to remember what Memorial Day is about.

17 Books that NPR Suggests for Summer Reading. I think I will have to put CIA Book Club on my to be read list. I am intrigued.
Inappropriate ThoughtsLast night we went to the Bat Flight at Carlsbad Caverns. The first time we attempted a storm rolled in and the program was cancelled. We were successful this time and it is truly remarkable the bats make it out the cave and back. It was interesting and very well attended as it was a holiday weekend. I think I can mark this off my bucket list. I got over the fear of a bat pooping on me. I wasn't so scared of bats in the hair, but the poop was a fear. This was a great side quest to take side quest to take on a Sunday night.
Trash Talk
I am not sure what happened at the park yesterday, but we found 4 socks and a pair of jeans. Yep, someone was pant less in the park. Glad we did not encounter said individual.

52 Ancestors - Military/War of 1812
I have been participating in Amy Johnson Crow 52 ancestors in 52 weeks. The prompt for this week was military.
My paternal 5th Great Grandfather, Vincent Crutcher, fought in the War of 1812. The War of 1812 was fought against and its allies in North America. The United States declared war on Britian on June 18, 1812. The War of 1812 ended officially Feb 17, 1815, after the ratification of the 1814 Treaty of Ghent.
Vincent Crutcher was born on February 2, 1760, in Frederick, Maryland. Vincent grew up in Maryland just when the Revolutionary War was about to begin. Maryland the state did not seem any battles during the war but there was a clear divide between colonists and loyalist. He married Barbara Smith on July 17,1809. They both were in their forties. when they wed. I think it is unlikely that this was each their first marriage. It is unknown exactly how many children were born to this union. However, there is one child born to the couple that is well documented, William Crutcher born in 1812. That is my 4th Great Grandfather. Below is an excerpt of the muster roll 3rd Regiment of Maryland Milita. Vincent Crutcher was listed as a private.
1814 Muster roll of Company of Infantry under command of Capt George W Ent in the 3rd Regiment of Maryland Militia under command of Lieut Colonel Henry Stemble in the service of the United States from the 24th of August 1814 when first mustered to Sept 30 1814 when last mustered
Sometime in the 1820's the Crutcher's moved to Fairfield County, Ohio. Most likely in 1829 as there is a n Ohio Tax Assessment. Vincent died August 13,1846 in Lancaster, Ohio.

Bitter Lake Wildlife Refuge
My son enjoys getting outdoors. We asked him what he would like to do for his birthday. He suggested taking lunch to Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The last time we visited it was more towards the winter. The desert did not disappoint with lots of wildflowers. We enjoyed walking all the trails.

Inappropriate Thoughts
I like listening to the radio in the morning as I make breakfast. On the station I listen to there is the livestock report by Smiley Wooten. (yes, the name he uses) Apparently there were cows that were cake trained up for auction. I hadn't heard that term before. I looked it up. Evidently, I am cake trained too. LOL. You learn something every day.
I also don't understand the obsession with highland cows. How many people want that picture hanging in their house?

What I Read in May and Summer Reading
There is no link up with Modern Mrs Darcy this month. She is releasing her summer reading guide.
My reading is starting to pick up.
This Wheel of Rocks - An Unexpected Spiritual Journey
by Sister Marya Grathwohl
I seem to be interested in all things Catholic. I am not Catholic. This is about Sister Marya and her journey with the Crow Indians. This is a book that explores how science and protecting the earth fit in with God and spirituality. This is a good read and made me explore my own thoughts on this subject. It was an engaging fast read for me even when some things went over my head. Sister Marya does a great job of exploring this subject.
Do I have any summer reading plans?
I do. I have 2 book club books to read
Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green

Inappropriate Thoughts
I think the new of Pope should just be called Pope Bob. Pope Leo XIV just doesn't roll off the tongue. I am not catholic but have been immersing myself in all things catholic lately. I have a fascination with different religions. The Pope's brothers have been cracking me up. He plays words with friends and wordle with one of his brother's. In a interview one brother said they use to tease him that he was too holy and if he didn't stop that he would become Pope. (foreshadowing) I don't think the Vatican is ready for an American Pope.
Deep Thoughts
I saw this Instagram post by Outside Magazine about a lady's favorite tree that she visits. I was saddened that I don't have a special tree here in New Mexico. I am officially weird. I realize I did have a favorite tree or trees when I lived in Washington. It was in Ferndale along Imhoff road. I saw these trees daily during the week transporting my son back and forth to his job. I noticed the trees because of the eagles.
Unpopular Opinion
I don't like Mother's Day. I do love my mother, and I am a mother. I love celebrating my mom but I don't really like it for myself. I don't like the typical mother day things. I really just want a nap and to be left alone.

Mary Ann had three daughters with Peter Gilligan between 1875 and 1882. Peter and Mary ran a Saloon and lived in the back. We know this because her husband and her are listed in the city directory. Throwback Thursday
I thought I would give a shout out to Stan the man aka Stanley. He accompanied me and my best friend on many walks. He is not a fan of bicycles, and he loves to stop to get up on a bench. I like this picture is taken at Hovander Park Parking Lot and Mount Baker is just peeking out in the picture.

Deep Thoughts
Sometimes I feel like God, or the Universe is talking to me. I keep running into this idea that Self Care is actually taking responsibility for your own health both mental and physical. I read in Real Simple an article titled "The Self-Care Reset" by Amy Maclin who interview psychiatrist and author of Real Self Care", Pooja Lakshmin. This book is about setting boundaries as a way for supporting your mental health and well-being. Lakshmin says "Real self-care is about making space for -your thoughts, feelings, and priorities." I am terrible at boundaries but maybe this is a lesson I need to learn. Just some food for thought.

52 Ancestors - 3rd Great Grandma's
One of the projects I have been working on is writing little biographies about all my 3rd Great Grandparents. I have 32 Great Grandparents of which I have 30 of those identified. In honor of the upcoming Mother's Day Holiday, I thought I would highlight a few of my 3rd Great Grandmas from my maternal line.
The Civil War happened during their lifetimes. Many of these mother's had children that fought in the civil war.
Margaret "Peggy" Rebecca Younkin Pringey had 3 sons who fought in the Civil war and 2 future son in laws that also fought. Peggy herself would die 8 months before the last battle near Bruceton Mills, WV was fought. She was just 49 years old. She would never see her two daughters Candace (2nd Great Grandmother) and Abbie marry civil war veterans. Link to Minerd Bio
Nancy Smith Liston also had sons that fought in the Civil War. Nancy had 2 son's and possibly a 3rd son who fought in the Civil War. One son that fought was my 2nd Great Grandfather Henson Smith Liston. He would marry Candace Pringey. Henson served with Candace's brother. Nancy had a long life of 81 years.
Most of my Great Grandmothers were married only once except Artellia Malissa Shaw Howard Brennaman McKenzie. She was married was married 3 times. She also had the most children at 12 and around 13 stepchildren. In 1870, according to the census there were Howard, Brenneman, and McKenzie children of the household of Joseph Mckenzie. It was one large, blended family. She also was born the latest in the 1800s. She was born in 1833. (link)
Mary Ann Pather Howard married Corneluis Howard. She is also a sister-in-law to Artellia Malissa. They married brothers. Corneluis Howard was Jesse Howard's brother. Mary's life was upended in 1868 when her husband was killed in a land dispute. She is the longest living of my 3rd Great Grandmothers at 86 years.
Sarah Sally Soddard(?) Hoyt married Alanson Harvey Hoyt. She had 5 sons and 4 daughters. I am unsure who her father and mother are. Sally is the one of the 3rd great grandmas that don't know her lineage. Sally lived to the age of 57.
Eliza Young Virgin married Kinsey Virgin on March 13,1831. They had 6 children but only 1 child, Mary Eliza Virgin my 2nd Great Grandma lived into adulthood. It is said Kinsey Virgin had a funeral for every child. The Preacher John Turner - little Baptist preacher of Crane Creek, Illinois did all 5 services for the children and both parents as well.

Throwback Thursday
I really like parades. My best friend likes parades. It was so much fun to watch the band in the parade with my son marching. The first parade my youngest marched in was at Oak Harbor, WA Holland Days. I must tell you finding the required white pants was a royal pain. Who thinks white pants are a good thing for a middle school boy? He is the trumpet player next to the girl. I can honestly saying playing in Band was transforming for my son.
