A quick pre Christmas Trip - San Antonio

I realized I hadn't posted much of a re-cap of visiting of San Antonio, Texas.

My husband wanted to take me on a trip for my birthday.  Due to unforeseen circumstances, it was delayed. He had been to San Antonio before, and he thought I would enjoy the riverwalk at Christmas.

We spent a short weekend in San Antonio, and it didn't disappoint.

The River walk is all lit up.  Our hotel was right on the riverwalk.  It is busy on the weekends.  The path is narrow.  People do fall in.  We didn't see anyone fall in. Our trip was a lot of walking and stairs.

Of course we visited the ALAMO.  We also visited 2 other Missions. (San Antonio Missions) We also visited the Acequias and the original dam.

There was also a historic tree, Kennedy Memorial Tree near the original dam.

We did make a walk to the Grotto. There is so much to see and do in San Antonio. We also visited the Briscoe Western Art Museum and what a gem.

The river boats are decorated and lit up during Christmas, and we rode on the last day of our trip right as the lights came on the river walk.  There are also caroling boats as well.

Side Quest - World Postcard Day/Geocaching

 World Post Card Day is October 1st.  It is a big thing in the Post Crossing and Geocaching Communities.

On Sunday we went to a Geocaching crossover event with Postcrossing. If you haven't heard Geocaching is turning 25 years old. There was a virtual souvenir for attending a postcard event. We haven't done a geocaching event for a while or much geocaching whatsoever. It was fun to meet some geocachers and exchange some stories.

I will be sending some postcards on October 1st not only to other post crossers but to my friends as well.

Side Quest - Carlsbad NM Museum

 

I had to drive to Carlsbad to get my windshield replaced so my son also tagged along. We decided to visit the Carlsbad Museum.  What a little treasure!

They had some amazing art and I asked my son if he had any pictures and he sent me these.  Evidently these are the names of the pieces he liked.

I kind of really like postcards or maybe I just like good mail/fun mail. I decided to try Postcrossing. Postcrossing is where you exchange postcards with people across the world. You sign up and a computer randomly picks a fellow postcrossing person and you send them a postcard with special number on it and you register it. After you register the postcard, your name goes into the cue, and someone sends you a postcard. 

This is my new hobby.  I have been doing it for a month. I have received 1 postcard and 3 of my 8 postcards sent have been registered - 2 US, and 1 Germany.  All my outstanding cards were sent overseas from Malaysia to Australia. You get the gist. It is a slow hobby as it takes a while to receive a postcard.

Bitter Lake Wildlife Refuge

My son enjoys getting outdoors.  We asked him what he would like to do for his birthday.  He suggested taking lunch to Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The last time we visited it was more towards the winter. The desert did not disappoint with lots of wildflowers. We enjoyed walking all the trails.

Bitter Lake Wildlife Refuge is known for its dragonfly's, and we actually saw a lot of these on the Dragonfly trail. It is really hard to take photos of dragonflies. We also saw lots of birds. This is a pretty time of the year to visit.
