Dead People Files Project - Women's History Month

I thought because March was Women's History Month, I would highlight my Great Grandmother's.  Why generally the census categorized these women as housewives. There were much more than that. I thought they might have more commonalities. I have not met any of these ladies. Only one was alive when I was born.

Some facts about this group of great grandmothers. Three of them died in their 60's. My Great Grandmother Mollie Hoyt lived until 91.

3 of these Great Grandmother's had 3 children leaving only one having 2 children.

Below are my Great Grandmother's listed.

Delight Baldwin Lendman

* The blurb on this card above is a bit misleading. She died in Lancaster Ohio, but her service was in Detroit Michigan, and she was buried in Indiana.

Why I am not a food Blogger

I baked a new to me bundt cake. The reason I can't be a food blogger is the photo below.

Picture with my finger in it and it is literally the only photo I have.  This is a pecan upside down bundt cake. It was delicious and very sweet so more on the decadent side. The pecans were from our yard.

We Adopted

We were missing our Tigger dog.  So, we had started looking for a new dog.  Our local humane society had an adoptathon. We stopped to check it out and the rest is history.

Meet Scarlet (German Shepard Mix) and Rhett (Heeler Mix).  They thought both were about 4 years old. I think the Rhett might be slightly older and Scarlet slightly younger. They grew up in the same household.  Their owner was evicted and left them behind with a chihuahua too. The chihuahua was described potato in shape. It was already rescued. They both so far two days into this ownership seem fairly chill. It is the honeymoon phase so to speak so interested to see how they fit into our family. Scarlet is the boss.  Rhett is a marker. He marked in our house so going to have to work on that behavior. Rhett seems to enjoy being outside for most of the day and Scarlet just wants to be where the people are.

Dead People Files - Encounter with William Penn

I was doing some research way back in one of my ancestor lines and find that these ancestors would have known William Penn. This caught my interest.

First off, I have no relation to William Penn. However allegedly some of my ancestors did come to America with William Penn.  I come from a long line of Quakers also known as The Society of Friends on my paternal side. The story below is about my seventh Great Aunt Mary Carver Knight.

Quaker Symbol

William Penn is considered the founder of Pennsylvania.  His father, Sir William Penn, was owed debts from the King.  So, William Penn was gifted what we know today as Pennsylvania and Delaware. Well as it happens that my ancestors came with William Penn to America in 1682. There is no proof they sailed on "The Welcome" with William Penn, but the circumstances would indicate they did. It took The Welcome 57 days to make the crossing from England to the mouth of the Delaware River.  This was considered slow for the time. About 1/3 of the passengers died of smallpox.

John Carver came with his brother's, William, Joseph, and Jacob and his wife Mary Lane.  John Carver is my 8th Great Grandfather. They all were members of the Society of Friends. Most interesting is that John Carver's wife gave birth to a little girl, Mary, in a cave in 1682 near Philadelphia approximately 5 days after the landing of William Penn though Oct 27, 1682, is her birthday most noted. This also the day that William Penn landed in what is known as New Castle, Delaware.

YES, A CAVE!  Mary Lane Carver gave birth to her first born a daughter, Mary, in a cave. Her daughter is considered the first child of English parentage born in Pennsylvania. John Carver was granted 690 acres from William Penn along Poquessing Creek in the Northeastern part of Byberry. Mary's father, John, was a maltster by profession and he did this in Pennsylvania. A maltster provides malt to be made into beer. John Carver's daughter, Mary, would marry Isaac Knight. Isaac Knight came to Pennsylvania with his grandmother, Elizabeth Shorter. She was a maker of gloves and owned a store. Mary and Isaac would marry and have 8 children. Mary Carver Knight would become a noted minister in the Society of Friends.  Mary traveled extensively as a minister. She was well known. She died in 1769. Mary was 86 years old.

I have been trying different ways to convey my stories.  Her is a doodle type attempt below.

Painted Rock

We were going for a little stroll and scooter in the local park on a rather cold day for New Mexico. We found this rock along the story walk.

House to Home - New Mailbox

We had a log cabin mailbox at our new house.  The roof kept blowing off.  Isn't that ironic? We lost some our roofing on our house during a windstorm. New mailbox is below.

Inappropriate Thoughts

Bell at the hospital where my husband had his surgery.

I thought I would tour all the medical facilities in my area. I literally sat in 3 different hospitals waiting rooms and an optometrist office.  Everyone is okay.  My husband had hand surgery. We accidently went to the wrong hospital to register.  That is how we roll. Glad we figured that out before the day of the surgery. We live about 50 minutes away. Who wants to figure that out at 5:30 am? Who knew that the next bigger town had 2 hospitals? I got my mammogram at the local hospital. My son got a prescription for glasses.  That was a process.  It is his first time for glasses.  He kept telling me he couldn't read the signs when driving. That is a sign my son. It was a busy medical week.

What I Read March

I am joining with Modern Mrs Darcy's Quick Lit.  Check out what everyone else is reading.

The Guardians by John Grisham

I picked this up at the local library book sale.  This book features a lawyer/minister that works for a justice project trying to free his innocent client. This is typical John Grisham, but I do have to say there is one scene in the book in a old house attic that really creeped me out. I think I watch too many ghost shows. I thought this was a good book.

Know My Name by Chanel Miller

This is my book club book. In so many ways this is an all too familiar heartbreaking tale of sexual assault. I got so much out of the discussion of the book. This is one book that needs to be discussed.  Something that was brought up in the discussion that 1 in 4 women are assaulted. So, chances are you know a woman who has been assaulted but also some who has assaulted a woman. I applaud Chanel for writing this book for the courage to speak out for victims everywhere.

Weekly Roll

The almost full moon was so bright on our way home from Alamogordo New Mexico.  We had been in Alamogordo for some imaging for Nonna.  It was both our first time traveling this way through the mountains through Cloudcroft.  It is a pretty drive. We saw lots and lots of deer on the way back. We even saw 2 elk and so many dead skunks. I was reminded we saw turkeys too. Much to my son's disappointment I did not see the giant pistachio nut at Pistachioland. I guess it was outside of town. Nonna's appointment ran long. I WILL RETURN.

St Patty Decor Challenge

I was shamed into producing some St Patty's decor.  I had put up some Easter decor and my oldest son said , " Where is the St Patrick's decorations?"  He also said I was early in putting up my Easter.  Below is my no cost to me St Patty's decor.

Yep, that is sea glass in the jar.  There is a jelly jar inside so the whole jar isn't sea glass. I put shamrocks on bamboo skewers.  I had the green paper and the technology to cut it out.  You don't need a fancy cutting machine, but it sure helps.

Inappropriate Thoughts

Well it was really windy last Sunday. We lost a lot of shingles. I now see the value of metal roofs. We also attempted to minimize the damage by nailing shingles in the wind. The picture above is of my son and husband doing work in the 45-mile hour wind up to 85 mph gusts. The flag post in the background is actually leaning because of the wind. This is not what smart people do. Good news is the roof people will come on Tuesday for an estimate. Bad news is they aren't going to repair it on that day. Pray for no rain.

I just am going to post unattractive wind pictures of myself from now on.

People are Complicated.

I had that discussion with my doctor.  I described someone as complicated to her. She replied most people are.

Dead People Files Project - Roots Tech 2023

RootsTech 2023 is happening March 2 -4.  This is a large genealogy conference that happens in Salt Lake City, Utah once a year and put on by Family Search. What is nice is you can attend virtually.  Attending virtually is free. I have attended virtually that for a couple of years. One year I watched various videos in my car while my son worked. I am looking forward to hearing various speakers including Amy Johnson Crow.

Wordy Wednesday

I attended an author talk for the book, The Revolutionary Samuel Adams.  I had to take a selfie with Stacy Schiff. Ha Ha. It was such an enjoyable zoom and one of my favorite parts of book club. The quote was featured in the last chapter of the book. My review of the book is here.
