Deep Thoughts

I

I watched the sneak peak of the new Matlock. I thought it was great.  Maddie Matlock, the character, brought up a great point how old ladies are invisible. I am not exactly an old lady, but I am also not listened too.  I have had a lot of that lately. My husband has a job where people always listen to him. It is actually other people's job to listen to him. I am jealous of that.

Tombstone Tuesday this ties into my 52 ancestors post on the tombstone that I posted.

Ghostly Archive has been finding gravest that have recipes on them and then making recipes and taking them to the grave. I guess she is making a cookbook with all the recipes. Maybe I need to leave my World's Best Cookies on my gravestone.

trash talk

Kev and I decided we needed to make trash bingo cards. This is the most common items with a few less common items we find consistently when we pick up trash at the park. Yes, I included an Allsup taco packet and a sock.  Ask and you will receive.

Last week we found Allsup Taco Sauce Packet, Coins, Sock, Vape parts, car parts, soda and water bottles, paper plate.

Def Leppard Stadium Tour- Last Stop

We came, we saw, we rocked, and now we are deaf.  We saw Cheap Trick, Journey and Def Leppard at Coors Field in Denver. This was my second time seeing Def Leppard. This was the last stop on their stadium tour.

We sat on Coors field. The seats were amazing. Show Report and Set List. I made the scrapbook page in project life.

What I read September

I am linking up with Modern Mrs Darcy's Quick Lit. Checkout what everyone else is reading.

A Woman of Intelligence by Karin Tanabe

Katharina worked as a translator for the newly formed UN. She speaks 4 languages. She was single and carefree. She met a pediatric surgeon and married him. She becomes a mother and feels trapped in her role and unfulfilled. Katharina is asked by the FBI to be an informant. This is the life she craves.

This book is one that was part of Jen Hatmaker's book club. I saw it mentioned on her Instagram. I thought it was a decent read. This would be an excellence book club read. There is a lot to discuss with parenting roles, interracial relationships, expectations for mother's, working mother's.

 Inappropriate Thoughts

This is more of a conversation we had at the Def Leppard Concert. This is an inappropriate thought that really could use a visual. There was a guy walking around in a crop top that had a hole in the center and deconstructed jeans as most of the front was missing. In the hole in the crop top was a temporary tattoo of himself. I also believe had temporary tattoos of himself on each leg. Above his navel were the words gluten free. He had shaved his arm pits and put temporary tattoos of legs there on each side of his arm pit. He also was wearing a long blond wig rock star style. The guy next to me was there with his older adult son and he mentioned how crazy some of the outfits were and I pointed to this guy. He was having his picture taken left and right. I pointed him out to the guy. He was like oh my god I golfed with that guy last week. He told me we had to meet up at the concert. He had something to show me. I thought he meant drugs and I don't do drugs. Evidently this guy is a salesman and just really out there. I really have looked all over Instagram etc. for a picture because my description just doesn't do it justice.

52 Ancestors - Tombstone

I am participating in Amy Johnson Crow's writing about 52 ancestors in 52 weeks.  The prompt this week was tombstone.

I came across in my research and it is a very ornate gravestone. The chains represent the Odd Fellows. The chains symbolize Friendship, Love, and Truth. See meaning here

Thomas Liston is my 4th Grand Uncle. His picture is on the left below with his wife on the right.

I just thought this obituary was lovely.  Thomas Liston purchased 700 acres or more which included the site of  Listonburg in 1834. Listonburg, PA was named mainly after the Liston's who provided industry in the area this included his father, John Liston, who owned a Tannery.  The activities that he did there were farming, lumbering, timbering, coal mining, and running a general store. He was married to Elizabeth and had at least 8 children. After he purchased all that land, he built a wool mill in 1844. This is the mill that his son's Jesse and Jeremiah would take over. In 1849, there was blacksmith shop. Lastly in 1864, Listonburg had a grist mill. Thomas died Sept 1, 1874, and is interred at the Trinity Methodist Church. According to 1880 prospectus about Listonburg, it is noted to having 15 houses and 1 church. Listonburg, Pennsylvania had a post office until 1960.

Gravestone Picture, Portrait and obituary information are from the website Find a Grave

52 Ancestors - We don't talk about it

I am joining Amy Johnson Crow's 52 ancestors in 52 weeks. The topic is "we don't talk about it"

When I started doing genealogy, I never thought one of my ancestors would have a criminal past. Then I discovered an ancestor with a record.

I did eventually ask my mother about this ancestor, and she had heard nothing of their criminal past. This has led me to a journey of discovery trying to understand what exactly happened. The newspapers of the time sensationalized the crime. I have spent a lot of hours researching what happened. It wasn't as black and white as the papers of the time indicated.

Reason T Hoyt was born to William and Jane Hoyt.  He was the youngest son and 8th child out of 9. He was born with a harelip aka cleft palate. In 1900 he was living on the family farm near Cumberland Iowa with his brother Lance and family. He was convicted of manslaughter and sent to Ft Madison Prison for a term of 6 years. His friend Bode "Robert" Brown was also convicted of manslaughter to serve a term of 8 years. Both were paroled early due to large number of letters received by the governor. In Reason's case, a petition of 185 names of the citizens of Cumberland and vicinity and large number of personal letters. Reason sentence was suspended on May 15, 1902. Robert "Bode" Brown sentence was suspended on October 19, 1903.

I also struggled with whether I should share this at all. The sad thing is what happened to this victim is not really all that different in this day and age. I can honestly say through my research all the parties involved were just trying to do the right thing. However, a 15-year girl died because of their actions. I have decided not to go into the specifics of what happened right now.  Time was served and the two convicted of the crime went on to live productive law-abiding lives.

The victim was a Miss Hattie Spies. She came from a large family.  She was born to Elizabeth "Katie" and Lewis Spies. Her father, Lewis, immigrated from Germany. She was hired out to work at a farm. She liked to go to barn dances and carriage rides.  She sounded like a very typical 15-year-old girl of the time. Hattie died September 8, 1900. As reported by the paper her funeral was large one with the procession from the home to the cemetery was over a mile long. I don't want her story to be lost to history.

Telling this story in a way that is fair and detailed was one of my genealogy goals for this year.

Inappropriate Thoughts

I can't help myself. I have started thinking about Halloween. By the way it is still in the 90s here. It feels like we are ready to bridge into a new season. I am ready to think about fall. I loved my gothic Halloween shelf in the kitchen. I am already thinking of ideas to make it better. I couldn't resist these dollar store mini bones.

Deep Thoughts

Labor Day seems to me to mark the end of summer and beginning of fall. It has been a wild ride this summer. I learned a bunch and had a chance to participate in some interesting activities. I am looking forward to fall which doesn't look like it is going to be boring at all.
